Visakhapatnam: The situation in Andhra Pradesh as cyclone intensified Hudhud gains speed. After an earlier prediction of landfall at midday by the India Meteorological Department, is not expected before 10: 30-11: 30 according to television reports.

But why name a hurricane? And why name it Hudhud?

Cyclones and storms were originally recognized by numbers and technical terms that only a select group of people who studied the storm, understood.

Eventually they were given names for faster and better as well as to publicize the storm warnings recognition. Although these names were chosen randomly before, meteorologists finally started using an alphabetic pattern.

Therefore, a storm with a name beginning with "A" would probably have been the first storm of the year.

By mid-1900 these storms were given female names.

In 1953, the National Hurricane Center maintains a list of names and since storms have been named in this list. They are now maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization

As Cyclone Hudhud, the storm has been named after the national bird of Israel and the name was suggested by Oman.

The Meteorological Department of India (IMD) issues warnings of cyclones eight countries. Each of these eight countries gets a chance to name the cyclone on the basis of a list of names that will all eight countries.

India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand provide names for cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
