Shillong: Fifty-nine people died in flash floods and landslides caused by the cloud burst in Meghalaya, the state government said Tuesday. "The number of deaths due to flash floods and landslides is 59, while five people are still missing," said the Chief Minister and Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management C Laloo Roytre. 

"We have almost completed the compilation of our assessment of the damage caused by flash floods and landslides. Hope to finish it soon," Laloo said. 

The recovery of more bodies was done after the water receded at several places in the plains of West Garo Hills and also in East Khasi Hills district, Revenue and Disaster Management Principal Secretary PK Srivastava said. 

On 24 September downpour that lasted for a week affected more than two lakh people. The state government said the flash floods and landslides damaged Rs 2,000 crore worth of property, including livestock, roads, bridges, and agricultural products. 

It is expected that the chief minister Mukul Sangma to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh with a full report of the damage caused in Delhi on October 10 Resubelpara NDRC official development block Sangma said Lina North Garo Hills, the most affected area, has 36 active camps with 31 of them in relief Bajengdoba and 5 Mendipathar area. 

Most of the people staying in these fields are left homeless and are waiting for government assistance. In three blocks in the West Garo Hills district - Selsella, Dadenggre and Trikikilla - most relief camps were unemployed even seven 27 camps still active.
