Vizag going to take the first step to becoming a smart city soon. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), additional commissioner, M. Janaki, said a team of American businessmen and Indian US-India Business Council (USIBC) will be visiting Vizag in the next month.
Janaki was the representative in the conclave Vizag US and India Smart Cities recently concluded in New Delhi. Minister of Urban Development, Venkaiah Naidu said that guidelines on what constitutes a "smart city" will be developed before the start of 2016.
While Ajmer and Allahabad are also in the plan to be developed as smart cities by the US, the USIBC prefer to visit Vizag first.
The USIBC team visits consist of entrepreneurs operate private companies already in partnerships with municipal corporations in different cities.
Janaki said that once the team visits Vizag and a meeting takes place, it was decided that the services GVMC can be opened to private actors. The privatization of solid waste management and water management are on the cards.
